The University of Lincoln has designed its field lab to support SME food manufacturers based in the Greater Lincolnshire area in adopting new robotics technologies to increase and optimise their production. The university has followed a “one to many” approach, i.e., linking each industrial challenge with a set of equipment that when assembled (following a modular approach) can demonstrate a solution to the related challenge. Not only is this approach cost-effective, as it allows to define a wide and diverse set of demonstrators with the minimum number of pieces of equipment, but its modularity allows to define a large number of demonstrations specifically tailored to a specific challenge in the three processing phases: primary processing (i.e., ingredients preparation); secondary processing (i.e., food production); end-of-line (i.e., packing and final operations).
